Magdalena Leśniak – Układanka – Painting and embroidery exhibition

The curator of the exhibition, Stanisława Zacharko-Łagowska, wrote: Magdalena Leśniak is an artist whose mindfulness covers both aspects of functioning: both the surrounding space and the objects filling it. She notices their form, outlines of shapes and their visual relations to each other. She also notices the meanings and meanings associated with them, both private, personal and emotional, as well as universal, symbolic, embedded in culture, tradition and the collective subconscious. He uses both consciously in his painting work.

Based on the observations and reflections resulting from this double mindfulness, she builds – also a double – narrative in her paintings. The first is a formal narrative contained in the physical and visual dimensions of the images. Their composition usually results from the shapes of the objects she paints. The artist gives up the third dimension, the painterly illusion of spatiality, adjusting it to the two-dimensional plane of the picture. The outlines of objects or interior fragments are cut out by flat forms filled with subdued and muted colors, sometimes only contrasted with elements filled with sharp colors. To a greater or lesser extent, retaining the resemblance to the real prototype, they begin to function in a sphere similar to abstract art: through thoughtful harmony, both in terms of proportions and colors, elegance and plastic rhythm of lines and complementary flat shapes, previously styled and carefully composed . And the second narrative, more literary – deeply personal, related to the desire to express one’s emotions and encode them in pictures, with the help of a set of meanings and associations related to imagined objects and situations.

The artist wrote about her exhibition: Currently, in my work I am looking for a respite and a springboard from everyday life. Art is like therapy for me. In the past, this life was a matter for me to create pictures. I took out its fragments and, after modifying them, I put them into my works. Everyday life fascinated me and was a source of inspiration. I created large series, supported by research on selected social issues. Most of my paintings existed for reasons. The Puzzle exhibition is a collection of paintings and objects from the entire period of my work.
